Gay Berlin

ArtHotel Connection is one of Berlin’s genuinely LGBTQ+-focused places to stay and has a location that is difficult to improve upon if Schöneberg nightlife is the priority. The small, proudly “straight-friendly” hotel sits on Fuggerstraße, right in the middle of the Rainbow District above the popular Prinzknecht bar. There are just 16 individually styled rooms, giving the place a much more personal atmosphere than the larger hotels nearby. Expect colourful interiors, free Wi-Fi and plenty of character rather than anonymous chain-hotel styling. Breakfast is served until late, which feels particularly well judged in this part of Berlin. Motzstraße, Nollendorfplatz and Wittenbergplatz are all close, and KaDeWe is only a short walk away. Several gay bars are literally on the same street. GayMapper tip: a great choice if you prefer small independent gay accommodation and want to step straight out of the hotel into the heart of Schöneberg.

Hotel Indigo East Side Gallery is a useful alternative if you’d rather experience Berlin’s eastern neighbourhoods than base the whole trip around Schöneberg. It sits directly beside the East Side Gallery and Oberbaumbrücke, with Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg’s restaurants, bars and clubs spreading out on either side of the river. Rooms are contemporary and colourful, with free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning and design touches inspired by the surrounding neighbourhood. There’s a fitness room and restaurant, but the real highlight is the rooftop Gallery Rooftop Bar, with excellent views across the Spree and Berlin skyline. Warschauer Straße station is around ten minutes away, giving you quick S-Bahn and U-Bahn connections towards Alexanderplatz, Mitte and western Berlin. This isn’t the place to stay if you want Schöneberg’s gay bars outside the door, but it makes much more sense if your Berlin plans lean towards Friedrichshain, Kreuzberg and the city’s more alternative nightlife. GayMapper tip: a good counterpoint to the Schöneberg-heavy choices — especially for repeat visitors who want to see a different side of Berlin.

Hotel de Rome is the option for a properly luxurious Berlin stay with sightseeing rather than nightlife at the centre of the location. It occupies a beautifully restored former bank on Bebelplatz, just off Unter den Linden and within easy walking distance of Museum Island, the Brandenburg Gate and Gendarmenmarkt. Rooms and suites mix the grandeur of the historic building with polished contemporary interiors. The spa is particularly memorable: the former bank vault now houses a 20-metre indoor swimming pool, alongside a sauna, steam room, treatment rooms and 24-hour gym. There’s Italian dining downstairs, while the seasonal rooftop terrace looks across central Berlin towards the cathedral and TV Tower. You’ll need public transport or a taxi for Schöneberg nightlife, but Mitte has plenty of bars, restaurants and culture of its own. GayMapper tip: a splurge, certainly, but an excellent one if luxury, spa time and central sightseeing are the priorities.

Dorint Kurfürstendamm is a strong option if you want proper five-star comfort in Berlin’s City West rather than staying directly in the gay district. It’s just off Kurfürstendamm, close to the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, Zoo station and some of the city’s best shopping. Rooms are unusually spacious, starting at around 40 square metres, with air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, large bathrooms and plenty of room to unpack properly. There’s a substantial fitness and wellness area with a dry sauna, steam sauna and relaxation facilities, plus restaurant Le Faubourg and a comfortable lounge bar downstairs. Schöneberg’s gay bars are not directly outside, but they’re easily reached by U-Bahn or a short taxi, and the western end of the scene is walkable if you don’t mind a slightly longer stroll. GayMapper tip: a good choice when hotel comfort and space come before being right in the middle of the party.

Quentin Design Hotel puts you right in Schöneberg’s Rainbow District without leaving you directly above the busiest bars. It sits on a quiet side street close to Motzstraße, with Nollendorfplatz, Fuggerstraße and much of Berlin’s traditional gay nightlife only a few minutes away on foot. The rooms have a contemporary boutique look with hardwood floors, air-conditioning, smart TVs and modern bathrooms, while some higher categories add balconies or garden views. There’s also a peaceful courtyard garden and lounge area — useful when you need a quieter moment between sightseeing and going out. KaDeWe and Wittenbergplatz are both nearby, and Nollendorfplatz U-Bahn station gives you excellent connections across the city. For gay travellers who want to stay genuinely within the neighbourhood rather than merely “near Schöneberg”, the location is hard to beat.

If you want your hotel to be part of the gay Berlin experience rather than simply somewhere to sleep, Axel remains one of the most obvious choices. It sits on Lietzenburger Straße beside Schöneberg’s Rainbow District, with many of the bars around Fuggerstraße and Motzstraße within a few minutes’ walk. The adults-only hotel has a distinctly social atmosphere and contemporary rooms with the bold black-and-gold styling associated with Axel. There’s a gym and rooftop wellness area with jacuzzi, sauna and hammam. KaDeWe and Wittenbergplatz are just around the corner, while the U-Bahn makes getting to the rest of Berlin straightforward. GayMapper tip: choose Axel if meeting other gay travellers and having the scene on your doorstep are bigger priorities than traditional five-star-style service.
