Named among Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people of 2020, Julie Mehretu is an abstract painter. She produces large-scale prints, drawings, and paintings that are built up through layers of acrylic paint, overlaid with mark-making using pencil, pen, ink, airbrush and screen prints. Critics have linked her work to nonliteral art movements noting her inspiration from the works of Frank Bowling and David Hammons. Mehretu has shown her work extensively in the U.S. and abroad in solo and group exhibitions, and is represented in public and private collections around the world. Mehretu is a recipient of many awards, including The MacArthur Award (2005) and the US Department of State Medal of Arts Award (2015). She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and is represented by Marian Goodman Gallery, New York. ABOUT THE EXHIBIT This comprehensive survey of Julie Mehretu works covers more than two decades of the artist’s examination of painting, history, geopolitics, and displacement. It includes approximately 30 paintings and 40 works on paper dating from 1996 to the present to show Mehretu’s explorations of abstraction, architecture, landscape, scale, and, most recently, figuration.
