Downstairs, the One Lounge mixes Manchester music references with a relaxed bar and breakfast area. A strong choice if you’d rather spend your money enjoying Manchester than on a huge hotel room. You really couldn't position a hotel much better for Manchester’s gay scene than LEVEN Manchester, sitting on the corner of Chorlton Street and Canal Street. Some include full kitchens and laundry facilities, making it particularly useful for longer stays. There is also a relaxed cocktail bar, while Piccadilly Station is only around five minutes away. You get the Gay Village literally outside while still staying somewhere that feels like a proper design hotel. GayMapper tip: A great alternative to Velvet if you want to stay directly in the Village but prefer a calmer, more contemporary apartment-hotel feel.

For location and convenience, DoubleTree by Hilton Manchester – Piccadilly gets an awful lot right. Piccadilly Station is virtually outside the door and Canal Street is only a couple of minutes away, making this one of the easiest bases for a weekend centred on Manchester’s Gay Village. Rooms are modern and comfortable rather than particularly adventurous, while the hotel adds a fitness centre, restaurant, craft bar and seasonal outdoor terrace. It is especially useful if you want the reassurance and facilities of a full-service hotel but still want to be able to wander home from the bars rather than think about taxis. Housed inside the impressive Grade II-listed Ducie Street Warehouse, Native Manchester by Numa is a good choice if you like the freedom of an apartment without moving away from the centre of the city. Piccadilly Station is just around the corner and Canal Street is an easy walk away. Under Numa the experience is more digitally led and self-contained than a traditional full-service hotel, which works particularly well for independent travellers and longer stays.
